Are you a green card holder who is ready to take the next steps to citizenship in the United States? If you’ve been a lawful, permanent resident of the United States for over 5 years, there are many political and civil rights to be gained by becoming a naturalized citizen. You may serve on a jury, vote in elections, obtain and travel with a U.S. passport, be employed by a government entity, or even hold public office if your aspirations are high! As a naturalized citizen, you will have new opportunities granted to you which would not be available with just a green card.
While rewarding, the path to citizenship in America is an incredibly difficult one. There are several basic requirements which must be met in order for you to be eligible; these include age, permanent residency status, continuous residence, physical presence, good moral character, English language proficiency, and knowledge of U.S. history and government. However, the next several steps become increasingly more involved, beginning with your initial application process. You will first have to complete the N-400 application which is 20 pages long! This is an incredibly in-depth form and any mistakes made could jeopardize your chances at being approved for citizenship.
Our experienced Phoenix citizenship lawyer can assist in the process to give you the best chance at a speedy and successful approval! Call today to schedule your free consultation and learn more about how the Ortega Law Group can fight for you.
Form N-400 Basics
Form N-400 is the application for naturalization, and there is a fee to file it with the USCIS. It requires you to provide detailed personal information, including biographical data, employment history, travel history, and family history. In addition, you will need to address your criminal history, affiliations with organizations, and past immigration violations, if they exist. As previously stated, the application is 20 pages long and does not allow for mistakes or false information.
With Form N-400, you will also need to be sure to submit the accompanying documents. This includes copies of your green card, passport-style photos, proof of residence and physical presence, tax returns, and other relevant information. Our Phoenix citizenship lawyer takes the time to review your form and documents extensively to ensure that everything is done correctly and that the supporting documents are included. You can have peace of mind knowing that you are in the best position for moving forward in the citizenship process.
My N-400 Is Complete And Submitted…Now What?
Following the completion and submission of your N-400 form, there are several other steps to be taken to follow through with your citizenship application process. These include:
- Scheduling a biometrics appointment where your fingerprints, photographs, and signature will be gathered. There may be fees attached to your biometric screening appointment which are separate from the fees you paid for your N-400 application.
- Attending your scheduled interview with the USCIS where you will complete an English and civics test. The agent who interviews you will be assessing your proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English. The civics questions you will be required to answer may be about a range of topics from national symbols, to U.S. history, political issues, political parties, the voting process, the Constitution, and more. You must correctly answer 6 out of 10 questions; if you fail to do so, you may retake the test within the next 90 days. If you fail once more, you will be denied citizenship and you must re-apply.
- Attend your oath ceremony to take the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S.!
